2-DAY CLASS MATT AND BURNISH GILDING ON GLASS
With Frances Federer on the 23rd and 24th of November 2013

The aim of this class is to explore the contrast of matt and burnish gilding. Matt gilding is dull and appears light, while burnish gilding is shiny and appears dark. Used in contrast the effects can be very beautiful.

Engraved watergilding is carried out first, followed by matt gilding and painting. Frances will show examples of gilding translucent colour, with compositions of gold leaf and the use of matt gilding with 22-carat gold. She will demonstrate all techniques before students can try them out themselves.

Frances Federer has been a glass gilder and researcher for many years now. She recently finished off her study on 'Gold, Glass and the Image' at the London Royal College of Art where she graduated with a master's degree in Philosophy.
